Voice, Also a Form of Performance
Oneworld Hanxin College is honoured to have invited professional voice-over director, Mr. Seah Song Fan, to share professional techniques in voice-over and voice performance with graduating students from the Department of Broadcasting, Television and Film.Mr. Seah Song Fan is the current president of the Voice Guild Malaysia.
He has been active in voice-over, advertising voice-over, stage plays, and film and television performance since 2001, and has a professional background in audio engineering.
In the class, Mr. Seah discussed the core techniques of professional voice-over with the students,
and shared his own experience entering the voice-over industry—starting with radio dramas and gradually exploring different performance forms, including musicals, stage plays, and film and television performances.
He specifically mentioned that the biggest difference between voice actors and film and television actors lies in "how emotions are expressed through voice."
Film and television actors can use facial expressions and body language, but voice actors must bring characters to life solely through their voices.
In addition to theoretical sharing, students also practiced voice-over on-site.
Mr. Seah provided immediate feedback and guidance, helping everyone better understand how to express emotions and immerse themselves in a role through their voices. At the same time, he also shared many practical recording techniques, such as how to alleviate nervousness before dubbing, and how to coordinate with each other when two voice actors are recording simultaneously, making it easier for the other to get into character.
This was not only a technical lesson,
but also showed the students that—voice is also a professional performing art.
Thanks to Seah Song Fan for his wonderful sharing, which gave the students a more realistic understanding of the dubbing industry.
